Combatting Winter Depression
Seasonal depression is more common than most think. At ABC Compounding Pharmacy near Studio City, we know that health is affected as much by the weather and the changing seasons as by the foods we consume and the exercise we get.
What Causes Seasonal Depression?
Seasonal depression most commonly presents itself during the wintertime and many scientists believe it can be linked to the lack of exposure to natural sunlight.
What are the Symptoms?
The effects of seasonal depression can cause individuals to experience symptoms of hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, lethargy and or insomnia, and general interruption of normal sleeping and eating patterns. These changes can get in the way of work and relationships and cause one to feel helpless and alone.
Here are some remedies to improve one’s mood during these bouts of depression that just might work for you:
Exposure yourself to natural light
One way to combat the draining effects weather changes may have on the body is exposure to natural light. Dawn simulators act as a ‘natural’ source of light that helps to gently wake up the body in the morning, and is a nice change of pace from a traditional alarm clock. Make it a point to spend time outside when the sun is out so that your body can absorb its natural rays. This will give your body a boost in vitamin D which will help to regulate your hormones and mood.
Take care of your body
Eating healthy foods, drinking water, and getting plenty of rest and exercise year-round can help elevate mood by helping to regulate one’s hormones.
Relax your mind
Practicing mindfulness and meditating can help reduce one’s anxiety and stress during the winter months.
Seek out your physician
If all else fails, schedule an appointment with a physician. Mental healthcare is as important as physical health and it is important to practices self-care so as not to burn out during periods of blues.
